The life and death of Martin Luther King – a visit to the American Drama Group in Trier

On Friday, March 20th, some students of the 12th grade visited the theater in Trier with our English teacher Mrs. Escher-Apsner. The play performed by the American Drama Group Europe dealt with the topic “American Dream” and showed the life of Martin Luther King with all its highs and lows. Moreover, the content of this play is of great importance for our present time, simply because racism is a problem in our recent time and society, too. The American actors stressed the differences and gaps between blacks and whites by wearing white or black masks, depending on the character they played. However, the most fascinating aspect to me was the atmosphere created with only some few requisites, light effects and the background music. Sometimes it was difficult to understand every single word because the actors were American mother-tongue speakers but you were able to follow the action easily because of the context.
Overall, it was a great performance and I would recommend it to everybody who is interested in a play about the American dream and Martin Luther King’s idea of a world without racism and violence against black people.
